The Chronic Fatigue Programme is a community service for
adults living in Manchester who have a chronic/long term health
conditions where chronic fatigue and/or chronic pain are the
primary problems. The service offers a pain course and a
mindfulness course for chronic conditions, aiming to empower people
to increase their self-management of pain and fatigue, reduce the
day to day impact of their long-term condition on their daily
life and work towards improving independence and increasing
physical activity.
The service is specifically for Manchester residents who have a
chronic condition where pain and /or chronic fatigue are the
primary problems and are:
- medically stable and able to travel and participate
in either of the courses
- not currently waiting for further investigations or
treatment
- interested in using mindfulness as part of their symptom
management
How do I access the service?
- You can be referred to the service by your GP, consultant
or relevant health professional.
- We are also able to accept self-referrals to the service.
What happens after I have been referred to the
service?
- You will be contacted by a member of the team who will arrange
an appointment to discuss the courses available
- During this initial assessment, you will be able to jointly
decide which course would be suitable for you.
- The courses are delivered in various locations across
Manchester. You will be able to choose which would be more
appropriate for you.
- Both courses teach a range of self-management techniques,
including:
- Effective pacing. Working towards personal goals which meet
your individual needs and values. These may be related to a
particular area of activity that you wish to develop.
- Understanding the physical and emotional effects of a long-term
condition and how best to manage this
- Using mindfulness skills to help with self-management and gain
the opportunity to learn a number of mindfulness meditations
- Sleep management techniques
- Management of setbacks
- Increasing physical activity through Mindful movement - these
are very gentle yoga-type movements which are taught throughout the
course.
- There will be an initial information course of one session
which family or carers can also attend if they wish
- Following the completion of the course, there will be a monthly
meditation drop-in session that can be accessed for further support
until you are discharged from the service.
- The process may involve referral to other agencies.
