Public Mental Health

The Public Mental Health team works to improve the mental health of people in Manchester and prevent mental ill health. Our main strategy is to equip a wide range of organisations with a greater ability to support the mental health of the people they work with. This is done mainly through our provision of training and information.

We work with Primary Care Mental Health Services to focus on the needs of people with common mental health problems and there is a strong collaboration with them in the provision of training and information.

We also work with the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust in providing the 'Supporting Health Programme'. This programme promotes the physical health of people who experience severe and long term mental ill health. An associated pilot programme, currently being evaluated by the University of Manchester, works to improve the physical health of people with dementia and their carers.

Our team is developing ways to improve the health of people in work, The present programme focuses on the health of staff in community health services with a view to taking that experience to a wider range of workplaces. It has a focus on managing stress and mental health at work.
