The Preventing Major Killers team aim to promote a healthier
lifestyle, and address prevention and early detection of diseases
such as cancer and coronary heart disease. We do this through a
number of different service strands.
Cancer Awareness
We promote cancer awareness to increase uptake of
screening programmes. This includes breast, bowel and cervical
screening.
In addition we provide professional support to NHS and Local
Authority staff and partner organisations working on disease. This
includes Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), Cardiovascular Disease
(CVD), Cancers, along with Diabetes and Stroke.
Community Food Co-ordinator Project
Through the Community Food Co-ordinator Project we work
with groups across the city on healthy eating and weight
management. We help people make changes in their diet to improve
their health and address the increase in obesity and chronic
diseases.
Getting Active Through Exercise (GATE)
The GATE project promotes the benefit of exercise
for people aged 65 and over to help improve their health and
prevent falls.
Promoting Physical Activity
As well as provision of a number of training courses, we promote
physical activity and in particular walking, through our work with
travel planners, The Ramblers, the Manchester Walking Strategy and
through the website www.gettingmanchestermoving.org.
More information about Coronary Heart Disease.
Services operate from a number of sites across the city. The
majority of projects and initiatives are delivered directly within
community settings.
All these services are widely publicised in the wards and
localities where they are being delivered, as well as through
flyers, promotional materials and articles in the press and
media.
