Psychological services in
physical health settings offer specialist psychological assessment
and therapeutic work for a range of medical conditions, and offer
specialist consultation, advice and training on using psychological
principles to improve patient care, as well as being active in
research and audit projects.
Psychological Services in physical health are provided through
service level agreements to a range of acute health providers
covering the main Manchester Acute Hospitals, and some other
specialist services. Clinical health psychologists work with adults
across the age range and provide services to a wide range of
clinical areas, covering specialist and regional units, including:
Renal Medicine/Transplant, Heart/Lung Transplant, Cystic
Fibrosis, Oncology, HIV/AIDS, Pain Services, Burns/Plastics,
General Medicine/Rehabilitation, Neuropsychology,
Neurorehabilitation.
Psychological services in physical health include assessment and
therapeutic work with patients, couples or families, or in groups.
Clinical health psychologists also work in teams, including
supervision of psychological work carried out by other
professionals, and provide consultation to healthcare staff or
multi-disciplinary teams about the psychological principles of care
of patients, and teaching and training in the application of
psychological principles to improve health care, for example in the
application of cognitive-behavioural theory and communication
skills training. Clinical health psychologists are also active in
research and evaluation of innovative psychological approaches to
patient care and work at clinical service, Directorate or Trust
level to help develop policies and procedures or advise and develop
new services that enhance the quality of psychological and physical
care given to patients.
