The Mental Health Liaison Service (MHLS) provides mental health
and risk assessments for emergency patients presenting to the
A&E departments at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), North
Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) and Wythenshawe Hospital with
mental health or self harm issues. They also provide liaison
services to the general wards of these hospitals where
appropriate.
The MHLS is a unique service in that it is a multi-disciplinary
team which is nurse-led, with a highly-skilled team who see, treat
and discharge patients.
The service is open seven days a week from 9am to 9pm at NMGH
and Wythenshawe Hospital, while at the Central Manchester
Hospitals site it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a
week.
The team carry out in-depth mental health and risk assessments
of all patients referred from A&E departments and refer them to
the appropriate services with safe plans in place.
The MHLS also provide a rapid emergency service within A&E
departments and general wards to people with mental health crises
who are not currently receiving mental health support elsewhere.
Staff have extensive knowledge, skills and experience of mental
health problems, drug and alcohol issues, self harm and
psychosocial stressors, and provide an individualised care plan for
each service user.
