Aims:

- To promote the safe, appropriate and cost-effective use of medicines across Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust.

- To provide user-focused and cost-efficient pharmacy services through agreements with acute hospital pharmacy departments and via the use of specialist pharmacists and nurses.

The Medicines Management team endorses the views of the College of Mental Health Pharmacists that;

- Appropriate drug therapy helps treat mental health problems, minimises relapse and reduces suicide

- Medicines Management services aim is the safety of patients, by making sure that people who need drugs get them and take them at the optimum dose, and those that don't need drugs, don't get them

- All mental health service users should have the support of, and access to, independent education and advice about drugs, preferably from a specialist mental health pharmacist or nurse.

Clinical Activities:

  • Pharmacists are actively involved with the Multidisciplinary Team Meetings on many wards
  • All acute and most non-acute wards are visited routinely by pharmacists to check medicine cards (e.g. for problems, legal aspects, interactions etc.) and answer any drug queries
  • Individual counselling of patients on the wards/day centres about their medications

  • 'MedEd' sessions for in-patients
  •  Pharmacy 'drop-in' clinics in the community
