Research and Development

The Trust has had significant R&D success in recent years, with increased research projects, publications and external funding. We are the proud host of Principle Investigators on 5 National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Programme Grants, and now host 5 prestigious NIHR Senior Investigators. We were ranked second in mental health only to South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust in the recently released league tables reinforcing our national and growing reputation for the quality of our research output. Researchers from MMHSCT and Manchester University have made major contributions to mental health research that have led to changes in local and national practice and have contributed to NICE guidelines on the treatment of mental health disorders. R&D Strategy

In such a prime position we have recently developed an R&D strategy, to ensure that the plans for R&D align with the strategic direction of the Trust and the national objectives. Our relationship with the University of Manchester is excellent and will be further strengthened through the Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre (MAHSC) partnership

The R&D strategy has been shaped by the R&D Committee and key strategic objectives of MMHSCT have been identified, which align with MAHSC goals. These objectives are:

  1. Establish R&D as essential core business.
  2. Demonstrably improve the healthcare of those within the Manchester & wider areas through the dissemination and implementation of research findings.
  3. Increase our capacity and capability for research in order to effectively support and retain our existing high quality researchers and develop the research potential further in all professional groups, service users and carers.
  4. Work with our partners to develop MAHSC and to increase our collaborative working for greater patient benefits.
  5. Consolidate our reputation as a world class centre for research in the area of mental health and social care.

The R&D strategy at MMHSCT has been developed, at least in part, to meet the demands of the National Strategy developed by Government. The national strategy has several aims, notably:

  • A thriving research culture within the NHS
  • Fairness of access across England for patients and health professionals to take part in multi-centre studies
  • More patients and health professionals participating in health research with high-quality protocols and early access to new intervention and prevention strategies
  • The best research and researchers winning grants regardless of location
  • Researchers working in a supportive environment to help them through the regulatory framework and conduct research relevant to the needs of patients and the population
  • Recognition that the NHS is taking an international lead in supporting a research-led culture for health
  • Researchers and healthcare professionals proud to say that they work in a research-led and evidence-based NHS
  • Health and healthcare improved by research

Hence, it can be seen that R&D is a major government priority, and that in terms of mental health research, MMHSCT is ideally placed to be a major player both nationally and internationally.
